Social Capital

Social capital is the networks or relationships one has to use for gain in the society. This could be between a group of students who engage in languaging in the same way, using a mixture of two named languages such as Spanish and English in their regular conversations. Teachers can leverage this social capital for academic literacy gains by purposefully grouping these students together to translate and then evaluate translations of difficult text (Goodwin & Jiménez, 2015), or by providing them sanctioned spaces to discuss texts in the language of the classroom (English) and/or in their home languages (Ebe & Chapman-Santiago, 2016). Furthermore, social capital is also leveraged when we purposefully use students’ family literacies and their funds of knowledge within the academic space (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Newman, 2012). These home-to-school connections are dependent on educators’ understanding of the social capital that even the youngest students possess to build upon in the school environment.
